Bespoke therapeutic parent and carer support in Staffordshire
I offer a number of packages of parent and carer support, all with the same broad aim which is to work alongside parents and carers, to offer them a space to think about what it is like to care for their child, to consider the experiences and the meaning of their child’s behaviour and interactions with them, and to work as a team to attempt to understand, digest and support their child’s difficulties. I aim to increase parent and carer resilience and the ability to manage difficult feelings and distressing situations, and to reflect with them on what may be being stirred up in them from their own experiences of being parented as a child. With parental couples an additional aim is to recognise the differences in parenting styles and build on strengths and compromise to work on increasing a united front.
Parent/carer support alongside therapy for a child or young person
Parent/carer support is offered where appropriate alongside individual therapy for a child or young person, unless the young person is old enough to access therapy on their own. The aim is to ensure we are all working on the same page and to support the child to know we are working as a team to understand and support them (please see my page on individual psychotherapy for more information).
Stand-alone parent/carer support
Sometimes children are not ready to access individual support for a number of reasons. I can offer parent/carer support on a fortnightly or weekly basis either in person or remotely for parents who are struggling to make sense of their child’s distress and are hoping for support in developing their understanding of their child’s feelings, experiences, communications, and how best to support them.
Foster-carer and residential carer support
Please see my page on care experienced children’s support for more information. I am experienced in working with foster carers to support their observational skills and trauma informed parenting styles, and I can offer group-work (work discussion or supervision groups) to residential care staff to support a whole setting.
